Melbourne trams featuring art from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s will make an appearance in this year’s Melbourne Festival in October.
Hopping on a Howard Arkley, pulling the bell on a Mirka Mora or leaping from a Michael Leunig were the stuff of everyday life for Melbourne’s tram travellers from the late 1970s to the early ’90s.
‘‘Art trams’’ were introduced by the then Ministry for the Arts in 1978, while Rupert Hamer was premier, as part of the Transporting Art project, which ceased in 1993.
Now art trams are set to return under a partnership between Arts Victoria, Yarra Trams and the Melbourne Festival.
Eight Victorian artists will be chosen to transform city trams into public artworks as part of the festival’s visual arts program.
